Cuttack, May 20: Trinamool Congress leader and MP Sudip Bandopadhyaya was granted bail from the Orissa High Court today.
He was earlier arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of involvement in the Rose Valley scam.
The TMC MP’s counsel moved the bail petition citing grounds of ill health. Bandopadhyaya had earlier claimed that he wasn’t involved in the said scam and pleaded not guilty.
Speaking on the issue, Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seconded the claim and said that she was informed of drastic deterioration of Bandopadhyaya’s health in custody.
Though the investigating sleuths sought further custody for the accused MP, a single bench of the Orissa High Court granted conditional bail.
However, sources from within the CBI said that the investigating agency was least happy with the decision of the High Court. The elite probe agency was learnt to be soon moving to the Supreme Court, challenging the order of the High Court.
Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal was earlier arrested for alleged involvement in the Rose Valley.
The Rose Valley Group of Industries had allegedly siphoned off over Rs. 17,000 crores from West Bengal, Orissa and Tripura.
