The C Times, 12th June 2017, Agartala: A press meet was held by Tripura Pradesh Congress Sri Birajit Sinha at Congress Bhavan on Monday demanding an apology from BJP National President Sri Amit Shah for his alleged remark on Gandhiji.
According to a report, BJP chief Amit Shah dubbed Mahatma Gandhi as a “bahutchaturbaniya”, a reference to his mercantile caste sparking a political row with the Congress and other Opposition parties demanding an apology from him for insulting the Father of the Nation.
Shah made the reference to the mercantile caste to which Gandhi was born while telling a select audience of “prominent citizens” in Raipur on how the “bahutchaturbaniya” (very shrewd baniya) had rightly advised dissolution of the Congress after Independence.
Shah had also said the Congress was not rooted in any ideology or principles and was sort of a “special purpose vehicle” to secure freedom.
Amit Shah, on the second day of his three-day trip to Chattisgarh, with a view to strengthening the party before elections in late 2018 made the comment while speaking to few eminent personalities.
To show their protest against the insult of The Father Of The Nation, Mr. Sinha and other party members will sit on satyagraha in front of Gandhiji’s statue at circuit house for four hours on 14th June.
BJP state spokesperson Dr. Ashok Sinha said, “The press meet by Tripura Pradesh Congress and their decision to sit for Satyagraha is just a cheap political gimmick, as they do not have any burning issues at hand. They have completely failed to understand the objective with which Sri Amit Shah remarked on Gandhiji”.
