MBBS Interns Stage Sit In Demonstration

The C Times, 27 June 2017, Agartala: A sit in the demonstration was staged by the MBBS interns at GB Hospital from 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesday protesting against non-payment of Stipend since March 2017. The doctors are having a tough time as they have not received their stipend for a single month since March 2017 said an agitator.

They have demanded immediate payment of stipend for the first two months. Secondly now onwards their stipend should reach them at the end of every month without any delay, said one of the interns. The protesting doctors have given an ultimatum till 28th June 2017 for the fulfilment of their demands and will go for a mass movement if their demands are not met within the stipulated time.

Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) refers to one-year compulsory work in the hospital attached to the medical college or in any other approved hospital as allowed in some medical colleges (also known as Teaching Hospital), for a period of one year. This is required for the award of the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB BS) medical degree in India.

An Intern (also called an Internee or a CRRI) is posted in all the clinical departments of the hospital on a rotation basis. This gives him the basic clinical experience in all the disciplines of medicine and enables him to work as a General Physician.

The intern is also given a monthly stipend. The amount may vary from one college to another, based on ownership by State or private entity. Completion of an internship is a necessary prerequisite for award of the degree, license to practice medicine and for postgraduate studies or higher speciality training.

The Permanent registration certificate along with the “MCI Registration number” (i.e., the license to practice) and the final Medical degree (i.e., the MBBS degree) is given only after obtaining a CRRI completion certificate endorsing the successful and satisfactory completion of the CRRI.

The stipend varies from state to state in India. In Assam and Bihar an intern is paid 12000 pm, Andhra Pradesh Chattisgarh and Punjab 8000 pm, Bengal 16000 pm, Delhi 13000 pm, Gujarat 7500 pm, Himachal Pradesh 10000 pm, Jammu 5000 pm, Karnataka 20000 pm, Maharashtra 6500 pm, Madhya Pradesh 6000 pm, Odisha 13500 pm, Punjab 8000 pm, Rajasthan 5000 pm, Uttar Pradesh 7500 pm and Tripura 8500 pm.
