The C Times, 27 June 2017, Agartala: In a tragic accident a 30-year-old man died after being hit by a bike. The deceased Nazrul Islam s/o Jahangir Hossain of Thakurmura area under sonamura PS was riding his scooty from Melagarh to Sonamura when he was suddenly hit by a speeding bike from the front at khedamura near ONGC office. Nazrul was knocked to the ground and he lost consciousness. Seeing him bleed profusely the locals rushed him to Sonamura PSC from where he was referred to GB Hospital in a very critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries at around 3 pm.
According to reports, Nazrul was returning from his friend’s house to Thakurmura when the incident occurred. The bike could not be identified as it had fled the spot. The police have recovered Nazrul’s scooty. A Suo moto case has been registered in Melagarh PS.
Road accidents have emerged as the biggest killer in Tripura, a senior police officer said on Monday.According to the director general of police K Nagaraj, 174 people were killed in road accidents in 2016 as against 163 in 2015 – a rise of 6.75%.
A total of 853 people were injured in road accidents in 2016 and 1,029 in 2015.
“Our target is to bring down the casualties in road accidents to zero,” the police chief had reportedly said at the inaugural function of the 28th Road Safety Week in Jan 2017.
Nagaraj said while in the entire country 39 people died in road accidents per lakh population in a year, in Tripura, 45 people died. Since 2010, the number of vehicles increased by 106.18% in Tripura.
The DGP said, “Road accidents have become a matter of grave concern. We are introducing several modern systems so that the culture of safe driving is encouraged.”
