The Vice Presidential election will be held on 5th August, the results will also be announced on the same day. Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced at a press conference on Thursday.
The last date for filing nominations for the Vice Presidential election is 18th July. The election is conducted through a secret ballot where only members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha get to vote, Zaidi said.
The Electoral College comprises of 790 members where 545 Lok Sabha MPs and 245 Rajya Sabha MPs.
A person needs to satisfy like
- Needs to be a Citizen of India.
- At least 35 years old of above.
- And qualified to become a member of the Rajya Sabha,
These prerequisites to become a Vice President.
A candidate’s nomination paper needs to be subscribed by at least 20 electors as proposers. And a security deposit of Rs 15,000 will be collected from each candidate.
Incumbent Vice President Hamid Ansari’s term will end on 10th August.
Mohammad Hamid Ansari is the 12th and current Vice President of India, also the chairman of Rajya Sabha. Ansari is the only person to get re-elected for the post of Vice President of India after Dr Radhakrishnan.
Hamid Ansari was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India on 1st April 1937 through his family belongs to Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. He is the grand-nephew of former Congress President Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, a leader of the Indian Independence Movement.
Ansari became the chairman of India’s National Commission for Minorites (NCM) on 6th March 2006.
