The President-elect Ram Nath Kovind will be quickly sworn in as the 14th President of India. Polling over 65 percent votes in Electoral College. Mr Kovind defeated his rival Meira Kumar by over 33,000 votes. The former Governor of Bihar will take the Oath of Office in the Central Hall of Parliament House.
Mr Kovind is the second Dalit President of India after late President K R Narayanan but, more incomparably, the first from politically momentous Uttar Pradesh and the first person from the BJP to hold the office of President since Independence.
Ram Nath Kovind has been sworn in as India’s 14th President replacing Pranab Mukherjee. He was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice JS Khehar in the Central Hall of Parliament. At the occasion attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former PMs Manmohan Singh and Deve Gowda, former president Pratibha Patil, Chief Ministers and MPs of both houses of Parliament.
Kovind thanked everyone for the humongous accountability bequeath on him. He said, “I bow to the 125 crore citizens’ of this great nation and promise to stay true to the trust they have to bequeath on me. Each one of us is a supervisor of India’s well-being and of the inheritance that will pass on the coming generations.”
Kovind will first meet the incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt. Both of them will then arrive in the Central Hall in a ceremonial procession. Kevind will take the Oath of office in the presence of the Chief Justice of India, after which he will be honoured by a 21-Gun Salute. The newly-elected President will then deliver an address in the Central Hall.
President elects Ramnath Kovind arrives at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He is accompanied by his wife. He is welcomed by the President. Mr Kovind takes a tour around the Presidential Palace along with Mr Mukherjee.
And the President’s Limousine has arrived at the Parliament Premises. First to alight is President-elect Ram Nath Kovind. Next is President Pranab Mukherjee. They are given the Presidential salute. This is the first Presidential salute for Mr Kovind and the last one for Mr Mukherjee.
Vice President Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Chief Justice J S Khehar welcome the President and President-elect. They guide the duo to the Central Hall of Parliament.
Seated in the first row are former President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh, Deve Gowda, senior Minister Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Opposition leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjuna Kharge and others.
After the ceremony, Pranab Mukherjee will give the new President a tour of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and will then head for 10, Rajaji Marg, where a freshly painted British ear bungalow with sloping red-tiled roof and fitted with chimneys, wide lawns and gardens awaits its new resident.
